Radiation Protection

Radiation protection, also referred to as radiological protection, is the science and practice of safeguarding people from the harmful effects of exposure to ionizing radiation. According to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), it involves “the protection of people from harmful effects of exposure to ionizing radiation, and the means for achieving this.”
While the primary focus of radiation protection is on human health, the IAEA highlights ongoing debates about extending its scope to include non-human species and environmental considerations. This distinction underscores the current emphasis on human-centric safety standards, even as broader ecological concerns are increasingly discussed.
Radiation exposure can originate from external sources or result from the ingestion or inhalation of radioactive materials. Effective radiation protection measures are designed to minimize these risks, ensuring safety through a combination of technological solutions, regulatory frameworks, and operational best practices.
